I would think that there is a large screw on the bottom of the leather case. I would suggest that you unwind that screw and then the case will come off. The screw is screwed into the threaded area where you would screw in a tripod.
The camera is, as one person told you, a literal brick. It is almost indestructible, but it can have some minor problems that can be fixed. If you learn basic photography with that camera, you will certainly know basic photography. The problems would be whether or not the shutter speeds are correct and that the camera stops down correctly. At most, that should cost you about $150, probably less, to get that fixed and then you can continue shooting with your grandfather’s camera. If it were my grandfather’s camera, I would be proud to use it!
